The passing words that the mind generates -- one minute they are loud and clear, as if I will remember them for months and the next hour they are like small snowflakes melting into the warming sun called time. Wish there was a way to commemorate these..without picking up my laptop or pen...something like getting recorded by the thin air around me. Yes, I know there are better gadgets available..recorder, smart phones...but I just don't want to touch any of those, specially when am not that used to touchscreen..my fat fingers just don't fit on the sleek keys...Yes I also know I can get a stylus...but so much for binding thoughts into memories...

Silenced Fights...

There is a lot of action followed by an equally lot of commotion followed by an uncomfortable silence. Yes, this has been the pattern - repeated innumerable times for the past few months or say years in our country.

The 2G scam - reports/news flying here and there - We all glued to our television sets - adrenaline rushing - what happens next? We have our faith in India's judicial system reinforced then - finally they have nabbed Raja with Rani and they are behind bars. Though the scam clouds were grey with the huge financial losses the country had to incur and also the amount of corruption it highlighted in our political and business arena, the silver lining was that many of them were behind the bars. A couple of years later - they are out on bail, of course the courts promise there is a case against them. BUT they are free after all and even giving political statements with renewed confidence, as if they are back just after a break. We have to probably wait for a decade may be for justice or just forget it - our memory can hold only somethings and there are too many scams to follow after all.
The coal scam - PMO blamed. Media dedicated a few days for a total coverage - and now it lies in dumps or am I not keeping up with the story which may be is getting just a 1x1 space on the 10th page of the newspaper!
North grid failure - total blackout symbolizing the current governance. News room discussion - surprising figures out in the open! The power restored - all's well - no complaints after all the electricity was back and people could carry on with their lives, the power was indeed restored!
Anna's promise - the way he roped in "aam junta" - a national movement finally entering into politics after a few months, its future unknown, its strategy hazy and undisclosed. Whats next? Will we get the answer or a ray of hope during the 2014 election or will some small unknown party challenge the parliament and die its natural death? Again a silence after a big turmoil and a smile on Congress's face after a big shame!
Baba Ramdev - finally breaking his fast today - couldn't really follow or understand the conclusion or was I expecting too much seeing the yogic followers crowding the country's capital. He doesn't promise entering politics but promises changes - unclear and unpromising.

Has it become a trend or was I becoming too optimistic? What is maligning or hapless is - we know the disease and we also know that the cure just fails to fight against it! Optimism prevails and it is silenced every time the fight is silenced!

Is the disease of corruption or corrupt politicians too deep-rooted or powerful or may be strategically insurmountable as to defeat the ones who rise against it?
"Justice", "judicial evidence", "anti-corruption slogans" - all lose value and just remain like a "temporary offbeat track" in our minds till the next equally strong or stronger bolt to the country follows!

The Prez game....!!

"Manmohan Singh" will be PM till 2014 - that's what Congress or in fact Sonia says. So, does this mean we will have 2 Prez and no PM till 2014? That's indeed a distorted form of democracy :) unless Manmohan Singh gives up public life, as he had declared a few days back, if any of the accusations are proved against him! But how can ignorance be proved? How do you quantify it? At the same time, isn't ignorance to corruption is same or at least as grave a crime as being involved in corruption? And specially if the ignorance has been done by the supreme PMO!

Anyway, now the world is seeing how a coalition government of the largest democracy can fight over a president candidature. Wish this power of filling the rashtrapati bhavan was given to the facebook users. How much fun we would have had!! Just imagine - our FB homes flooded with so many likes and dislikes, cascading shares and postings! One click on the like and dislike could change the future of the candidate :) There could have been a mobile game too - where we could have various hurdles like Mamta, MS, Sonia, Advani to be crossed to finally fill the Prez chair :) It would have been fun with background rabindra sangeet or italian music at appropriate points. I would say it would have been more interesting and unpredictable that farmville(simply because farmville is the only FB game am aware of :))...And when finally if A P J Kalam(I wish!!) was the winner - we could then jump on to another game to decide how the UPA govt would be disintegrated and what combinations could make the next coalition :)...while the world would watch the largest democracy again fighting over another chair!

We, the silent middle class?

Petrol price touching beyond 80 in Bangalore - didn't really come as a surprise, it was the need of the hour. The fuel prices cannot be left subsidized. The UPA govt had shouted this and justified the rise. As a responsible tax paying citizen we concurred. Diesel is not affected and though I don't own a diesel vehicle, am happy the price of diesel didn't increase - for the fear that it may have caused a similar increase in my monthly budget. I can still manage traveling by whatever limited and shoddy public transport the govt has provided, but I need to eat and buy groceries, milk, basic stuff to run a household. So, the middle class adjusted - may be also because we are so much exasperated by our day to day lives that it is very difficult to analyse and act on the political and economic situation in India. So, 10 days we cribbed, flooding FB with our posts or chit-chatting over social interactions - criticizing the move and then finally getting back to our weekend and weekday activities.

A news item which has failed to leave the business section for a past couple of months - Rupee has been falling because of global and internal effects. But it may be temporary as is being read by the middle class  in the newspapers. Gold (and of course dollars!) are the safest investment bets, with the sensex sliding smoothly with each passing day. But, we the middle class are patient, we will wait and watch, patience is a virtue which has been ingrained quite deep especially in situations like these...

Then a few days back, the FM expressed worry on the non-existing industrial growth that was reported for the month of April - investments declining etc. Newspapers were full of that resulting in creases on our foreheads too -- declining investment especially from the foreign land, uncertain policies, delays in approvals and the list goes on. India Inc is criticizing - and newspaper/media is getting its daily bread by showing how the prices of bread has increased in the past two years! We, the middle class, are re-organizing our budgets to fit the new situation - some are even thinking of getting better or more jobs for their finances to work - after all we accept and have been accepting for the past 60 years that govt process is slow with loopholes as big as hundreds of crore sometimes.

But not everything is slow. A few quick policies are being rolled out - for eg IITs and other engg institutes will have a common entrance with Class XII board marks to be taken into consideration -- what a suggestion - it was surely the need of the hour!! This is not the first time Sibal has tried to inflict something nonsensical. But, anyway, we, the middle class, will wait till it is enforced(may be followed by increased quota and sub-quota!). Not everyone needs to bother also, only those people whose children or who themselves might have IITs as their dream institutes to get in. Everybody else can relax - we, the middle class, have our homes to take care of. "My country" is to be studied only in social sciences!

And now the latest piece of news: the S&P de-rating India from the list of investment destinations or whatever we call it. Our FM doesn't give a damn - he may not till the investments come to a halt to zero may be (anyway he has to handle the situation only till he becomes the Prez or latest till 2014). We, the middle class, are waiting for the surprise package from the govt which will suddenly lift all the fears and let us continue with our daily grind, otherwise life still goes on.

I don't know what the middle class can do, but certainly more than treat the current events as mere news articles, that keep on changing daily.

A spark is the trigger to a fire - we have to fuel it to engulf our nation...but are we, the middle class, ready to burn our hands?

The Aamir effect

Ok..I had been memorizing for over a week that 6th May is a Sunday and it meant "Satyamev Jayate" would be aired on the TV and wouldn't miss it ! Even though the timing was a bit odd - 11 am in the morning and this time on a Sunday is for tea and newspaper, while telling my maid how to clean the nooks and corners which otherwise are left unnoticed through out the rest of the week. But still I thought this Sunday would be an exception.
So Sunday, that is May 6th came with its full glory and warmth - with the Sun especially shining bright. I remembered that it was "big moon" day or whatever we call it. But, somehow my memory tricked me in forgetting that Aamir's much awaited show would be telecasted on not just one but 2 channels( or was it more)!!! In fact I read somewhere that first time a reality show was being aired on DD and a pvt channel simultaneously - such is the charisma or Aamir.
The clock struck 11 - my TV remain muted. No activity - no Aamir and no Satyamev Jayate. I had totally forgotten my childhood hero and his show. Now my fondness for Aamir traces back to my school days when QSQT was released - I had watched that movie 3 times on the VCR on a single day! And yes, how cute he looked - he had become our heartthrob within a few days of the movie hitting the theaters - not that it is unusual, I think half the nation would have fallen in love with him.
Next day, that is on Monday, the reviews of the show were everywhere - on the radio and also in print. Appreciations galore -  by the way when was the last time somebody criticized him :)
Anyway, the point is that I missed his show - my husband said I should have gone for Tata Sky plus - in fact Aamir also has been advertising it !
So what next - I have to rely on "you-tube" now - my savior whenever I miss any show on TV which I would have liked to watch. Though it might be relayed again - but who wants to see all the ads - I can watch him uninterrupted on you-tube - just hoping that somebody would have uploaded it! :)

Shop till you drop!!!

Shopping is a good purgative - when you are feeling low or may not be so low. It's a welcome change, that leaves you with only change in your pocket. And mind you, its not just a woman thing - everybody enjoys it equally! What with so many kids shops blooming across the town like the mayflower trees. Anyway, consumerism has been given a new definition - I would say it certainly matches the high definition experience! You can shop anywhere - in the malls, superstores, the small corner shops, the sales people coming at your doorstep and not to forget the e-retail that is catching up in India.
Last week only we had the "aamwaala" at our apartment door step - and those mangoes were not ordinary ones, they were direct from the farmers! That was the USP and gave people the feeling as if they are plucking mangoes directly from the tree and putting into their mouths! And as if that was not enough, he even promised to deliver it to your homes in the apartment and collect the booty. Heights of home delivery - people didn't want to carry the kilos back to their house. Nowadays we prefer lifting the weights in the gym rather than the weight of groceries. It's all about giving oneself a sense of pseudo-achievement - the end result might just be the same though ! :-) Anyway the promised shopping experience has hit the nerve of the consumers and has left no stone unturned in making them believe as they are the king or to be more sensitive to all the genders - "rulers"!
The second shopping experience - which I feel is also a very time consuming experience so much so that sometimes I am left with the feeling after shopping that if I could just buy time in a mall!  So how does one start ones journey to one of these magnificent larger than life malls?

1) Take your car out of the basement parking of your skyscraper and then reach your apartment gate
2) Wait at the apartment gate for the traffic to move - specially if it is Saturday evening.
3) Let your car crawl till the next signal - while you are wondering that two clocks were ticking - one your time clock which never stops and just starts ticking faster when you are in a hurry and second your petrol tank clock as your car moves at the lowest gear.
4) Anyway once you cross all the signals on the way to your mall, you see the parking at the mall has a huge  queue of cars to be parked
5) By this time you are in two minds whether you should really go ahead with the plans, whether this wave of consumerism and crowd of malls is for your benefit, whether the corner shops with all the items stacked and hidden was a better shopping experience!
6) Anyway once you reach the mall, just the smell of the atmosphere inside make you leave all your worries in the car parked in the 10th level of the mall - you memorize the parking spot number lest you are unable to find where your car is parked on the way back!
7) You and your family are so elated that you try not to mind bumping into the sea of humans - all amazed by the colorful items the shops hold, the floor of the mall shining making you feel a resident of a Dubai like city . And while you are appreciating the concrete beauty around, you end up spending from the credit card - stretching your budget bit by bit or shop by shop. Why not if it could give that happiness which had been elusive for so long with the increasing inflation and stagnant salaries!
8) Spending at least a quarter of your day and your monthly budget in the mall, you finally head back after much protest from your companions. Journey back is mostly about pondering what the credit card bill may be next month and promising to oneself that these visits to the malls should really be curtailed!

So are we stuck with nothing better to do? Is shopping more of a addictive pass time leaving you short of time rather than a matter of need? But, there is a solution to everything and here it is - e-retail and teleshopping. You can buy anything from groceries to baby products to cold storage food products! You click and pay(nothing is like a free lunch or free shopping coupon!) and its at your door step! Though it cant give you the experience but the time is not far away when some mobile app will be developed that can simulate that too. Imagine if there could be a mobile game on your android phone which gave you the feeling of being in a mall! So even though you might win all the time but will end up losing your hard earned money! And I am certain it would end up blowing up your credit card - but not to worry as there would be a solution for that too -- virtual money will be a big thing soon!!!! So "Consumer" is certainly the ruler - it pays for buying the products and also pays for spending!!!

Want my cup of tea

It had been lingering on my mind for quite long now - just the way its effect lingers on my taste buds till I have it again - my cup of tea....
I wanted to write about it when one of my friends told he had given up tea! How can you give it up? Anyway I just let it be. And then on my flight back from Chandigarh, the airline magazine I read was totally dedicated to tea. Was it a marketing strategy? Because during the flight I bought 2 expensive cups of tea, which was quite unlike me. I promised to myself that I would blog about it as soon as I reached home! But then I let it be...yet again.
Sometime during the last week I had been sharing my evening cup with one friend or the other...just appreciating how the same ingredients make it taste so different each and every time. The taste changes everytime if I have with that extra spicy "lahsun sev" or with the simple old fashion marie biscut(not biscuit!). I thought I would certainly write about it - my journey since I became a teaholic...not that I have it many a times in a day, but I want that 1 cup of good tea to keep me going.
The morning glory of that cup or the evening peace it brings after a tiring day....how it relaxes exactly you like an ideal husband should! I had an extra liking for that roadside 3 rupees(now its surely more with inflation) tea accompanied with the piping hot mirch bajji just near my old office building.
Tracing my journey from the beginning, I had started with "Punjabi" tea - the big glass with thick tea made mostly of milk and that extra helping of sugar. You reach a Gurdwara in Punjab at 5 am and you will be greeted with that weighty glass of tea!
Quite a many years later, down south here, I discovered various ways of experimenting with it - cardomom, ginger, fennel- one at a time or all thrown together. The east effect - leaf tea with just 1 spoon of milk or lemon tea with that beautiful golden color. Finally a couple of years back, thanks to my neighbour, I had a tryst with Kahwa - the kashmiri chai. I would have never imagined that one could have tea with almonds in it!!
Then further south - in the southern hemisphere...while I was in Oz, I got to taste the sweet cinnamon tea -- better known as "chai latte"...my saviour whenever I had the urge for that cup on the move in the Australian continent.
Then when I was on the equator a few days back - got to taste "teh chi" - tea in singapore - not very strong, but lovely color and rejuvenating effect!
Now my latest discovery -- tea with lemon grass...strong smell with equally strong taste...but no doubt good one!! Many more which I appreciate -- kulhad chai, cutting tea in that small glass ...cups bought to fit various moods when I drink tea...as if cups add flavor, actually they do at a different level..signaling the mind that the flavor has been enhanced... :-)
So while a write, I have put the tea to boil and soon I will have that cup ready...for me to sip and think...I finally blogged about it...and the tea continues to linger now as a blog too...

White Life in Bangalore....

Bangalore mornings...generally slow and lazy. Even if it is the summers...seldom does it happen that it loses its morning cool - soft and cozy. I wake up in the morning and don't really want to wake out -- if you know what I mean.
Its winters now and winters are short -- and chilly and cloudy -- days are short...just don't realize how soon the sun hides to make way for the cold moon. I had been thinking...what we had a silver lining to these cloudy dull days...what if it snowed in Bangalore. Tiny flakes floating down my balcony. My daughter would love collecting them in her spade from the sand toy kit -- the way she tries to do with the rain drops. Just that the snow drops will stay for some time and she will be happier and busy for at least some more time :-)
So, just thinking aloud...what would the snow on the street look like...may be white with loads of brown here and there -- when every time somebody dug up the ground. You cant say that the digging will stop just because it snowed -- they don't stop digging even just when the road has been freshly laid -- the black tar still shining bright! But anyway white with brown if better than brown and more brown!!
Now, thinking about the brighter side...we would just discard our boring office jackets because just those wont help! Bikes and autos on the road will be a big no-no...and just imagine the lesser amount of scratches on your car! I would certainly love that...We could always blame the snow jamming the roads as against traffic for late show ups!
For sometime, our CM would just sigh in relief..all his denotified land invisible and he can always fight for a new law that denotification laws don't actually apply to lands under the invasion of snow...anything can happen when you want to save your chair!
Think of it, there would be entrepreneurial opportunities too..what about hoarding all the snow to make up for the water shortage...after all snow-fall harvesting will be easier than rain-water harvesting :-)
No potholes on roads - all filled by snow..BBMP can save money..all the garbage can hide underneath the white sheath...clean white bangalore :-)

Santa Claus would appear on the snow-clad roads rather than in mall-centers decked with loads of cotton if it just snowed in Bangalore..... :-)

Welcoming Monday...

Its a looooooong Sunday...merging silently into the official first day of the week. This doesnt happen too often - no long weekend trip(for a change no traveling!), just got to know on Friday that Monday is "bandh". Great...business get affected, money lost etc etc but what about the people relaxed :-) that counts too after all!
Talking about people, the Indian Skipper got married - but am too old to worry about that :) hopefully his game will remain the same and we will continue to win matches specially T20s(thats all I watch now - 1 days are too long!). First time watched Etv Jharkhand to get some inside news. But then all they had was a couple of snaps repeatedly being shown from different angles, as if reality changes every time you change the focus!!

And so also, Germany crushed Argentina - not that I am a soccer fan but I had a good time while my husband was explaining the game to my mom. To my surprise she enjoyed watching it - a relief from the loud TV soaps. Whosoever thought they were entertainment was living as a recluse or just had a bad temper!

Best of all, its an unplanned holiday on Monday , matching the calendar with the US vacation time of 4th July.

Sometimes, doesn't it seem that you have a lot of time and you think you can fit in everything -- so many pending tasks, forgotten indulgences and the list goes on endless. You start with one of them and by the time you are not even mid-way, you realize its better to sit back and give up because time runs really fast specially idle time. So, pending tasks still pending, forgotten indulgences never remembered - you just start doing something silly like blogging in the wee hours so that you wake up very late next day and everything next day runs late!

So while the clock ticks away the free hours, you again accept that you should never plan your holidays. You should just let things flow. After all weekdays are the reality hours and weekends should be the lazy gaps cushioning us from them!

Ahmedabad Diaries - the first reel

Ahmedabad – the twin city of Gandhinagar which is the capital of Gujarat – the land of the Mahatma – I have a sojourn here - a short one (though which may actually seem long depending on my experience)
I landed on the airport of Ahmedabad a few days back – the same day when Aamir Khan along with the other idiots landed on the very same airport! I overheard somebody saying that Aamir was coming from Kolkata to promote his film 3 idiots and then the lightening struck - this flight had come from Kolkata via Bangalore – so I was traveling with HIM in the very same flight for the whole 2 hrs!! I missed the opportunity again and it was too close a call – felt bad if I would have known this just 2 hrs ago, my experience would have been rich. I could have added having met Aamir too in person to the list, this would have been the second major one (that really mattered) after meeting (actually watching to be very correct) the Indian cricket team on the flight from Ranchi a few years ago.
Anyway – this is my third trip to Ahmedabad and I could notice a substantial change – even in its air (after all the other two trips were made in the nasty summer months!). At last I had chosen a good time to come here – I just had to battle the enormous amount of dust which is an integral part of this city (just like 99.9% Indian cities), but the weather was on my side. Anyway Ahmedabad’s airport luckily and thankfully is still within the city unlike Blore or Hyd, so you could just catch any mode of transport to reach anywhere in the city say in max 30 mins – that's the beauty of not being a metro (apart from ofcourse not having a metro!).
So after well-settling in the dream MBA institute here – I think it comes more in dreams and generally doesn't become a reality for most of the odd 3-lakh MBA aspirants every year! So it’s for people who not only dream big…but also can make the big dreams happen. To clarify, – there is no 2 month MBA crash course here, hence I have not come here to study in any course here, but to merely reside and become a mute spectator to all the activities here and also their coverage in the newspaper.
A couple of days back I was talking to one of my very old friends and he suggested that I write a book like the many other MBA pass-outs from this institute and pen down my experiences here. But then I am not experiencing anything else here – except the daily grind of running a household while running behind a kid at the same time! And none of the MBA aspirants here have the time or energy (read the latest book which describes IIMA as a pressure cooker!) to share their experience with me – so what can I write, may be just a few not-so-significant or path-breaking thoughts. May be some of the thoughts can be categorized as having no value proposition and strategically misplaced – straight out of that part of the brain which has the most number of files archived – call it the junk folder…so as and when my RAM retrieves these from my hard drive – a blog follows. Too many jargons in a few lines?  may be it's the IIM air…More from me in Amdavad later…

For my daughter on Mother's day...

It was on the beautiful afternoon of July 16th 2007, that my daughter Myra chose to enter our lives. I could hear her cry in the OT and it was then that the nurse whispered it’s a baby girl. I thought, thank god I had thought of a girl’s name just a week before (Somehow we were not able to decide between Meisha and Myra). I was not the first one in the family to take her into my arms – in-fact one of the last ones as I joined her in the private ward after a couple of hours..and there I could see her neatly and nicely tucked in a white(with pink lining) cloth in the cradle..with eyes closed…so peaceful, angelic and godly. To be frank..a kind of aura which none of we adults have. It’s true that god resides in children.
First night with Myra was tough as we were by ourselves (ofcourse the efficient nurses were there to help)..call it lack of knowledge or probably first experience, we didn’t know what to expect..and here she was, no longer a silent infant, but screaming at the top of her voice…we were confused, tensed, tired and I was near to tears…nothing was able to calm her..My husband rushed for the nurse and like a true savior she handled Myra – I felt like an idiot, but I knew it was a long way to learn. It is strange but its love in the true sense that whenever Myra laughs or smiles its me who feels happy as though we are still chorded…all the other kinds or spheres of love look meaningless when compared to this divine feeling…

The five days in the hospital were ice breaking session for Myra with her family – the 'naankes' and 'daadkes' were proud and happy…everybody taking turns to take care of her as I was still weak after the surgery.

And then began one of the most important and talked about part of parenthood…giving up sleep at night. But somehow you feel so energetic as a mother that even when the clock struck the 24th hour to wake me up..I felt as if it was still middle of the day…and I could spare a few minutes having a cuddly talk with Myra..she seemed so tiny yet assertive as if telling her mom – “though I am little but I am the BOSS”

Her first smile, her first somersault…her first so many things - her giggles and the twinkle in her eyes..her first step..her first word and all her imaginative stories(the other day when we were driving on a flyover, she simply said “Mom we are going on a slide!”)..…My mother says she reminds her of me when I was a kid…good to be born again…wish she lives all the good moments of my life…and hers too….

Across the wall of IIMA

Recently I got the privelege to stay in the IIM-Ahmedabad campus. The temperature was bearly bearable with the mercury touching the awful 44 degree mark. But to adapt is human and that's what I also did. I have been staying in Bangalore for quite long now to be thoroughly spoiled by its weather. However much we complain about the rising temperature in the Silicon city, but we surely are lucky to be living here.

The IIMA not only boasts of the achievers getting the most sought for education and exposure in its MBA program - but it also has the state of the art campus. I first stepped into the area in the dim hours of evening and could surely see some street dwellers resting against its outer-wall. Surely, its not an uncommon site in India - we know there is a huge percent living below the poverty line. And then after all the homeless need a place to rest in the evening. I surely felt sad seeing their plight, but soon realised that these people just stay there always - even in the burning hours of afternoon.

The divide is so clear across the wall - There is the youth of our country getting ready for bigger jobs spending lakhs of rupees on the education in the finest Management institue of India. And so are there the children a few metres away - who just stay there not knowing if the heat wave will let them survive till the next day. While the one inside the campus worry if they will be able to get their dream job in finance or sales etc, there are those ouside who are still dreaming about a place to stay in or may be they have even stopped dreaming...

A New Year

It’s just a matter of a second passing by…and it's a whole new year to welcome. Goodbyes and cheers all in one chorus…crackers for some and a noisy sleepless night for others. Dividing time in past and future…good-riddens for some and sweet memories for others. The welcome song is sung and we greet the coming year more than any other guest – the changed date might bring in changed times for us all. ‘Change in anticipation’ is always thought as towards the better. It's a new calendar, a new date and a new list of holidays…

We have been forced to move a few steps backward while we step into this new year. After nearly a decade of merry making, using without thinking and touching new heights…we have finally realized “slow and steady wins the race” and that we need to preserve our fuel for long races. Our fuel – may it be the fuel in literal sense or energy from various resources in the more abstract one.

“SAVE” – that's the ‘saving mantra’.

Save ourselves, our resources and our nation…it’s that simple if we have the wish to…

A cup full of Beans!

French statesman Talleyrand has truly said: “Black as the devil, hot as hell, pure as an angel, sweet as love.”
Smell it and you would like to devour it…or just be so mesmerized to let it flow down your throat slowly and gradually….till it’s in your system and you feel as if you have never been so awake in the whole day!! Just a cup of hot coffee makes such a difference!!
It’s a ritual for many of us every day - the reasons might be many – to ward off sleep or just for the taste of it or to share a late afternoon office gossip.
It is of course not a cup of tea for non-coffee lovers - its simply bitter liquid which would be better off in the dust-bin! But talk to the babus in the government offices in the southern part of India and “coffee” has many faithful lovers – its almost in competition of sorts with their wives. It’s the cocaine of the day- with drugs not allowed at the office premise – ask a coffee addict and he will surely agree!!
I got the real taste when I migrated to this “then-beautiful” city of the ‘then Bangalore’ – when the coffee vendor at my office used to pass through the cubicles at exact 3 pm (it was like a wake up alarm of our post-lunch siesta) – offering us ‘filter-coffee’ in steel glasses. No vending machines – no plastic/paper cups – no adulteration – but just pure coffee pleasure!!! And since then – I have been a coffee lover – be it filter/instant – any unadulterated form!
Coffee, was originated in Ethiopia(where to start with the coffee beans were chewed) and traveled all the way to India in the middle 1600s with the hills of Karnataka being the largest coffee producer today in our country. Bangalore surely boasts of a happening coffee culture with the many ‘Café Coffee days’ and ‘Baristas’ opening even in the far-flung areas – surely we see a lot more happening over coffee these days! It has undisputedly taken in the international look (as well as price!) like any other thing in Bangalore – with the Hawaiian/Kenyan Safari flavors doing their best.
Travel to places around Bangalore – such as Coorg or Chikmaglur or the like and you find this drink in its purest form – a coffee connoisseur can have a time of his life. It undoubtedly connects us back to our history - least affected by the so-called distortion in the name of growth and development. I call this culture because it has changed with us but not lost its authenticity…hope we can say the same about Bangalore in years to come.

zzzzzzzzzzzzz..............

It was one of the very very rare weekdays when I had to take an off because of some work. Luckily things got sorted out real soon and by noon I was all free though a bit wound up. I headed towards home-so unlikely to go in that direction at this hour of the weekday. My mind was racing and making a long list of ‘to do’ tasks which could be completed now that I had the power of time with me. The sun was bright and happy and you could call it a warm afternoon if not hot. It reminded you of the college days when you could just sleep through the afternoon lab practicals without even a shred of guilt to mar the sheer joy…
As soon as I entered by house, I realized that indeed the sun was a bit too high and the cool of my house welcomed me. I suddenly had amnesia and my mind trashed the list into the recycle bin..the only signal my brain communicated was zzzzzz….Now was the time to just close my eyes and go into deep sleep , while the rest of the world worked hard for their living. Oh what a pleasure it is…to know you have a whole long afternoon stretched in front of you to just sleep…no chores , no todo’s…just idle sleep…no monsters waking you up…the simple basic pleasure o life yielding a million bucks…as more abstract and yet irrevertible though not valued forms of money…one’s health.
When was it last that today’s common, independent, rising and shining men/women had a straight eight hours of sleep without a single thought of the next days list of Herculean tasks? There are things all around us which need time..the luxuries/passions of life..but all mere things…we are living in a maze of objects which we cant do without..its the same hollywood dream/nightmare come true when machines start controlling the human species..though in a less dramatic and more subtle way…The long queues at cinema halls, the mad rush in the malls, the traffic jams on the road, the competition to be ahead….where is the pleasure of listening to naani’s bedtime stories when kids can play video games or watch endless cartoons…where is the satisfaction in just having a relaxed late morning cup of tea when the previous day we had hit the disc till the wee hours(Bangalore is lucky to be awake only till 11:30 pm!)or slogged our brains to the extreme in our offices…
How our minds and souls plead us to slow down, savour the moments of life..invest with undisturbed and undisputed sleep…so they feel taken care of for a long-lasting healthy return called “life”…..

My four-wheeled two-wheeler drive -A dedication

“The deal is done…We agree to pay that much..” – the new master said to me and she was sold…My first car, with whom I have spent five precious years of my life, was to have a new owner in a couple of days. That day I drove from my office in a strange mood…living all the memories this machine has given me. I had been more or less the sole driver of this silver Santro LS Zip Plus.My husband had driven home this relationship in May 2003 - THE first big buy when you fish out all your savings but still feel happy as you drive your first car from the showroom to the mandir..so what if you had to wait for 3-4 hrs at the showroom just to get the keys and the final papers. You suddenly feel rich behind the wheels when the pandit congratulates you on your achievement – as if he is not at all bothered about the dakshina that was to follow…

For a road-traveller like us, our car has been really reliable and tough…bravely putting across the potholed roads- even in those times when there were never-ending “no-road” patches in Bangalore – when the going was real tough as the Dharam Singh government had refused to release funds for the Bangalore infrastructure (or probably they were released but went to wrong pockets ). The highway drives were adventurous especially once when I was trying to overtake a few trucks in a row with the Santro packed to full capacity and all of a sudden a few ominous looking gigantic trucks came from the opposite side – face to face with my sophisticated front-wheel drive. I had nearly made up my mind (if at all I was thinking at that time!!) to hide beneath the truck on the left – when my husband reminded me that it was no a video game and we might really be hurt. The power brakes were really useful and very very effective at that time and later we could afford to just laugh it off. Don’t take me as a bad driver (nobody has ever complained when I am behind the wheels), as there can be times like this when you think you can never get out of it in a single piece. Like once when we were returning from Ooty cruising on the famous 36 hair-pin bend roads (this time my husband had decided to take the driver seat) – and suddenly my husband declared that he was not able to put the brakes. Its worth imagining what the look on our faces would have been when we got to hear this going downhill at an angle of nearly 45 degrees!! Later he realized that it was his mind not the brakes playing the game – mind it - it can surely happen on that road!!

For the past couple of years my Santro has played an important role as a ‘city car’ – its as convenient as driving a bike with the added advantage of having an AC cooling your mind in the Bangalore traffic. Parking it is a marvel – anywhere and everywhere – it will just silently wait for you while you inhale the black smoke on the Bangalore roads or just jostle yourself inside the busy malls all in the name of shopping or entertainment. There were times when you just come back and see it scratched by an adventurous bike or slightly bumped just because somebody couldn’t maneuver their vehicle with adept…but then it is bound to happen in Bangalore. Even though I really appreciate the patience of our people here but there are times when luck is not with you even though your license is. Specially the month-ends- when the policemen are prowling like hungry tigers to cut as many slips as possible – just stopping on a footpath (ofcourse when you are ‘inside’ the car) can earn you a traffic ticket – the only relief is the low charges which we Bangaloreans don’t mind as much we mind following the traffic rules.

It’s just a few hours now before the new owner will take her away from me , never to turn back(hopefully not- its always difficult to give back the money you just put in your pockets)…I will be wandering ‘becar’ (in Volvos/autos/taxis) ofcourse only till my next Hyundai comes fully loaded - all set for action on “namma Bangaluru” roads!!! 
